App of the month: Drum Guru

Drum Guru is the brainchild of Rob Wallis, founder of Hudson Music and DCI videos (remember them?) as well as president of Drummers Collective in New York, and is a superb collection of video lessons from some of the biggest names in drumming including Steve Gadd, Steve Smith, Chad Smith, Mike Mangini, Mike Portnoy, Joe Bergamini and Tommy Igoe.

Image_04The app is free to download, and features a ‘sampler pack’ of lessons to get you started, with further packs being available to purchase costing between $1.99 and $4.99, with each pack containing several videos from the chosen artist. Each video is playable at regular speed as well as (roughly) half time so that you can witness each example at a slower tempo.

Linked to this is a practice area where each example covered is fully transcribed out and playable at three different tempos (regular, slower and faster), with a built in metronome feature so that you can play along with the recorded example or drop it out so that you can just work alongside the metronome and use the audio example for reference. Superbly simple, crystal clear and highly educational, Drum Guru is a must for drummers of any level who want to improve their skills behind the kit.
