Review: Remo Powerstroke 3 with Black Dot

The Powerstroke 3 just got even better

New to the Remo kick drumhead family is the Powerstroke 3 Black Dot, available in both Coated and Clear.

This head is inspired by legendary drummer Steve Smith and Remo has, very impressively, managed to improve upon the highly popular Powerstroke 3. The head features the usual thin underlay ring on the outer edge, which dampens unwanted overtones, but Remo has added a five-mil Black Dot, which provides deeper low tones, a more focused attack and greater durability.

We tried the 22” Clear version, which sounded great in various tuning scenarios. Lowering the tuning made the drum sound super low in tone and gave it some fierce attack. The kick drum pedal responded well against the Black Dot and felt really comfortable to play. When tuned a little higher, the head still kept its controlled tone and sounded top notch. Miking the kick drum had amazing results, so the Black Dot should work well in both live and recording situations.

Size options are covered, with the range boasting 18”, 20”, 22”, 24”, 26” options. You will not be disappointed by the Powerstroke 3 Black Dot and I’m sure that studio engineers will enjoy having yet another top sounding drumhead to choose from.
